Walter,

My yearly IFR Package chart subscription recently expired, and I'm leaving on a trip this week from Reno to Dallas, so I went to renew the package and found that you had increased the price of the IFR package by almost 25% from the prior price of $89, but left the VFR Package pricing unchanged. Considering that the FAA provides all of these charts free of charge, and all you do is run them through a reformatting program utility, this price increase seems a bit steep, is there some other cost factor involed?

Steve, if you think this price increase was steep, wait until the FAA removes the free data next April 1 as they announced today. Jeppesen/Boeing finally donated enough money to the Obama administration to get the FAA to remove the free data. Start thinking $300 to 400 a year for the "free" updates from the FAA. I expect XM Sirius to be donating big bucks soon to Obama to get the FAA to remove the free data from the ADS-B issue also.

I'm sure someone from AP will provide a more comprehensive answer (they have before; I tried to search for the posts but couldn't find them), but until they do I'll remind you that the approach plates and airport diagrams are now geo-referenced, when prior to v6 they were not. Originally, the FAA was going to include the geo-ref data with those charts for free, but earlier this year they announced they would not be doing that after all.

AP had been counting on the FAA data, and had to scramble when the FAA pulled the rug out from under them. AP selected a 3rd-party geo-ref data provider, but that 3rd party charges for those data, and AP has to pass those charges on to us.

Despite the fact that I cannot find the messages now, this coming price increase has been discussed on the forums more than once, and I received at least a couple of emails from AP alerting me to the price increase. To ease the transition, AP had continued to hold the price at the $89 level for several weeks after v6 was released and encouraged current subscribers to re-up at that rate before the new price took effect.

EDIT: Here's a post from Walter with info on changes to the VFR and IFR subscription packages, including rationale for the price increase: ifly.adventurepilot.com/SUPPORT/Forum...

Steve,

I'm sorry you are disappointed. We've been discussing the price increase openly on this forum for almost a year - knowing there was going to be additional cost associated with the Georeferenced plates feature. It was announced months ago to this forum, and an e-mail was sent to all iFly owners a month before we changed the price to give everyone a chance to purchase another year at the existing rate.

Thanks,
Walter

As a result of those emails, I, who am not IFR, but will be, opted to jump on that $89 offer to extend my current subscription..

Thanks Walter for giving us the heads up and opportunity to save a few bucks!!!
