On this particular ADS-B there is no external GPS antenna; only the internal one. It works fine on the hat rack. There is also an internal ADS-B antenna, or you can connect an external antenna. I'm no rocket surgeon but I disected a wireless router antenna to measure the actual length of the enclosed antenna wire and did the math, and the 1/4 wave freq for the ADS-B is fairly close to the same length. So as an external antenna I connect a small router antenna (shown in pic). Also for the Mooney, I have a short extension cable and suction-cup the antenna to a rear window. Seems to work fine for me. If you fly an experimental, you can buy a cheap ($25) non-certified transponder antenna and connect to it or buy a certified one ($75-$300) and have it professionally installed. You should also know that my SkyRadar L only does the weather frequency and not the active traffic, etc. of the dual-freq models. If the box is up front with me I can charge it from the ship's 12v plug while it's in use. So for safety, I added a Shottky (sp) diode to the circuit so the portable batteries can't back-feed to the panel when the master switch is off. If I had it to do over, I'd make it smaller with only one battery.

Rich,

The GDL39 is definitely one of the best priced products Garmin has offered. This issue it that is it only compatible with other Garmin units, actually only the 795/796. Both prices over $2k.

They will not integrate with us or other GPS units or app. I suggested they are limiting safety and holding back the benefits of ADS-B. Garmin portable units have really slowed down due to the pricing in the market. I contacted Garmin to work with them to integrate the GDL-39 with the iFly, they said "no we are not integrating with other brands".

I think the reasonable GDL-39 pricing is to compliment their 1090 ES upgrades for ADS-B out. They don't have an affordable ADS-B Transmitter option, so they have to make the receiver (GDL-39) affordable to offset the overall ADS-B In/Out costs. What pilot would want to pay for ADS-B Out, but not be able to benefit from that data others are sending out.

Additionally, they need a ADS-B receiver to mate with their Pilot App to be competitive. What would Garmin look like if they have to use a third party piece of hardware to complete with the ADS-B demand.

No doubt it is a nice unit, but it has limited use in todays market. I personally don't really see Garmin opening up to integrating with other brands and Apps. Just my two cents... probably only worth about a half cent.

They do advertise that it works with the iPad or Android device, but it sounds like only if you are running the Garmin Pilot App. And it is only Bluetooth, no WiFi.
I was just indicating that the look, form factor, pricing and adding battery powering are improvements (no wires required). This would look better Velcroed to the top of the panel. I would expect other manufactures will be offering something similar soon that would work with the iFly, as ADSB gets more and more popular.

I agree with you there. I think we will see the form factor change over the next year or so. Keep in mind a Transceiver can only get so small and needs a remote transmit antenna due to the 30 watt transmitter. The transmit needs to be away from the box with the GPS and receive antennas due to interference.

I have to admit I am not very up to date on the ADSB technical specs and RF frequency and power levels. I need to do some reading on this and give this more thought of how I would mount it and move it between my two planes. Jeff's system looks like a workable idea that I would look closer at duplicating.
