Can anyone advise me how to decide if I should use an external antenna. I am awaiting version 7 software to order an Ifly 720. I goes into an RV3 with bubble canopy.

Perhaps it depends on your location but in the NE I have never experienced signal loss when the iFly is mounted in my plane. Indoors can be hit or miss but otherwise I don't think an external antenna is necessary.

I am amazed at the ability of my 720 to pull in a signal. I can get a signal (weak) in my basement. Truley amazing device.

Hi Larry,

Relatively few users have required the use of an external antenna... maybe one out of every forty or so. Users that have located their iFly low in the panel at the bottom of a stack or mounted to odd metal structure have sometimes needed to use the external, but it is relatively rare. On a few occasions, RF noise from other avionics has created reception problems, and using the external antenna in a more remote location in the aircraft has helped.

Hope this helps, Ed

So Ed, I would conclude from your feedback that in the absence of aircraft internally generated complications, GPS "uptime" is not improved by an external antenna ?

Thanks in advance, Larry
