I've sucessfully cloned the SIM card in my 720.
Primarily so I can take one home and update it using iFly Connect on my Windows hardwired internet connection (much faster and less flaky than using WiFi at the airports).
I swap them back and forth bringing the most updated one from home to the airport and the "stale" one back.

Behind my question is the thought that it might make sense to be carrying the second SIM in the plane.

If no one ever has had a failure in flight that could have been resolved with a spare SIM, no point.

How often are you going to update the sim card? If you update before every flight, you'll always have both in the plane when you fly. Insert the new card as part of your pre-flight routine and stick the old card in your pocket or flight bag to take home after the flight.

That is what I do. Update the car before flight, take to the airport. This way I have all new weather and TFR data. The I take the old home with me to start it all over for the next flight. Always having a backup with me.

After talking with Sandisk and them telling me that a 1-2% failure rate on SD cards is acceptable to them, I decided I wanted to reduce the odds by having two functional SD cards on me in the air. And Sandisk is the lowest, most guaranteed card.
